Fast progress in the fight against food waste

By Paula Rook for FlyingWineWriter.com

The recent year is being great for innovation against food waste. I hear about Real Time Pricing (substitute for stickers) and  dry-misting  in supermarkets. The first idea is in a pilot fase. The second idea is also in observation.

I download the application “to good to go”which gives me the option to eat for 5 euro breakfast of some hotels in the city after 10.00 o’clock. I even can buy a baguette for the same price before they through it away.  They offer also a “magic box” for 5 euro with `waste food` from a few supermarkets.

I like the projects with insects such Protix, beacuse it has large impact and it is really sustainable. There are many organizations working in communication for consumers in The Netherlands such as Nederland Voedsel Land (Local platform). Other networks are  Damn Food Waste (From OneWorld Magazine), Food Waste Community (Platform in Dutch), Samen Tegen Voedsel Verspilling( with a transition-agenda),  No Waste Network (English Site for local companies),  Refresh ( EU). The last one is founded by Horizon 2020 Framework Programme.  In those websites you will see the partners and the `Ladder van Moerman`.

Ladder van Moerman

Lets talk about a referent in English from the government in The Netherlands, the topic about Food gives you a taste of the complexity about food waste, however the page has no update for 2019. In the same page you see “cutting downs on food waste” which remarks  The United Nations  goal: to cut global food waste by 50% by the year 2030. Review also information from Rabobank in English, it gives a view of the important facts around food waste. If you need to see the extension of the subject, read about Waste Management Facilities because it gives you a general view of the problem.

The network exist and the impact of the initiatives are running fast.  In some of the networks I mentioned, appears Wageningen University as partner. I wonder who are the innitiators in the rest of Europe. On the other hand,  in the rest of the world, is already late to implement this level of network. They see the problem, however they have no plan to solve it and they do not want to invest because it has no priority for government .  If you see the hills of trash in South America, for example, how can people tolerate it? and how long?

They are living in trash and polution; creating an unsustainable economy and unhappy life for them self and for the future generation.
